THE VOLON

Literature has been making its mark on fashion for centuries. Books and fictional characters are often a source of great inspiration for designers, their collections and aesthetics. Eujung Jang, also known as EJ, looks more towards philosophy. Inspired by what Jean-Jacques Rousseau calls ‘the will of all', the young Korean mother founded the handbag label The Volon in 2013. EJ first started her career in music, as a cellist. Once she graduated, she put her scores aside to join her family's interior design business. After a few years, the designer embarked on her own journey with The Volon. First unveiled in Paris and showcasing distinctive designs, the boxy silhouettes and ornate elegance of the Seoul label's bags appeared everywhere thanks to pop-up stores at the Excelsior in Milan and the Rare Market in Seoul. Combining contrasting styles, (classic vs. modern, muted vs. colourful, masculine vs. feminine,) the brand carries unique and innovative accessories. Architecture remains a main influence for the designer, who openly cites Gio Ponti (and specifically his metal ornamentation) as inspiration for her designs.
One of The Volon's other strengths, it is often talked about by the right people. Since its creation, the brand has been a firm favourite of popular influencers like Leandra Medine, Irene Kim and more recently, Pernille Teisbaek. Two eclectic pieces are bringing the brand success. The first being their Trunks, small and sturdy boxes with polished chains, exuding a subtle masculine touch to any outfit. The other being their Gabi clutches and bags, cut in the softest leather, more feminine yet as structured. This vision is ever present in their Spring-Summer 2020 collection and is sure to further raise The Volon's profile.
