Stone Island or "Stoney" as fondly nicknamed by its followers, is the leading brand in outerwear since its creation in 1982. By researching a rigid, two-tone material with an aged look, seven jacket designs were produced, becoming the iconic Tela Stella canvas, originally used for manufacturing truck tarpaulins. This mini collection draws its inspiration from military themes, featuring sleeve patches and presenting a compass rose, a symbol of love for the sea, which has since become the brand's insignia. A year after the brand's launch, Italian founder, Massimo Osti, passed the baton to Carlo Rivetti, who set to work on shaping Stone Island's DNA. Focused on researching and developing fabrics, the brand produced new textiles and dye recipes in its laboratory. This unleashed numerous innovative reversible jacket designs with colour changing, heat sensitive and reflective features plus removable linings, made from a single nylon filament... The constant experimentation with transforming materials combined with its garments' casual style earned the label great recognition.
First adopted by young Italians sporting Paninaro style in the '80s, Stone Island jackets and coats then found a new audience among British football fans who loved these flashy-tone designs, releasing an image of virile masculinity. Lightweight hooded parkas and padded puffer jackets made their way into American rappers' collections: Drake, A$AP Nast and Travis Scott gave the label an added boost, introducing it to a transatlantic audience. Collaborations with Nike and Supreme further built Stone Island's notoriety among younger generations.
