GIVENCHY Women
In constant search of the perfect balance between tradition and modernity, craftsmanship and innovation, Hubert de Givenchy has been presenting the avant-garde and timeless codes of his eponymous brand right from his very first collection. Today, Artistic Director, Clare Waight Keller is cultivating the heritage of the design house bringing us a subtle blend of elegance, delicacy and appeal. Born in 1927, Hubert de Givenchy studied graphic design at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts and started working with Jacques Fath, Robert Piguet and Lucien Lelong. He then worked for Elsa Schiaparelli before launching his eponymous brand in 1952. To present his first collection, he surrounded himself with his friends and collaborators including his PR manager, Bettina Graziani, who inaugurated the show with what went on to become the famous Bettina blouse. A white linen blouse featuring ruffled sleeves and broderie anglaise, injected with a refreshing youthfulness. The same year he designed Les Séparables, elegant blouses and lightweight skirts blending architectural lines with the simplicity of fabrics, introducing a casual chic style. Seduced by this refined feminine silhouette, a contrast to the corseted outfits of the time, Audrey Hepburn became Givenchy's muse, designing her cult outfits for the film, Breakfast at Tiffany's. The legendary little black dress was born! After a 40-year career, Hubert de Givenchy left the company in 1995. Since 2017, the brand's artistic direction has been entrusted to Clare Waight Keller who joined the house after working for Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren and Gucci and being Artistic Director for Pringle of Scotland and then Chloé. Her initiative: to offer low-key distinctive designs, using new techniques, new materials and infusing an innovative and contemporary aesthetic with a lavish signature.
In the Women's Spring-Summer 2020 collection, Clare Waight Keller pays tribute to two cities that marked her career. One being New York, illustrated by raw, faded and frayed denim as well as a working-girl attitude with bermuda short suits, long jackets and leather bustier, pencil skirt combinations. And the other, Paris, presenting its celebrated romance with floral dresses, puffed sleeves and stitched necklines.
The Givenchy man has an urban masculinity inspired by '90s styling and the Korean dandies' allure. Suits are presented in surprising pastel shades while trousers and overcoats are produced in a pixelated Italian jacquard design. A harmonious synergy between the label's classic opulence and a refreshing breeze of a generation in search of minimalism. > View more
