What if the sneaker became new eco-territory for brands? From Veja to Stella McCartney, Nothing New to Toms, fashion nowadays is all about eco-friendly sneakers, proving that you can have swag—and a conscience. Amid these beautiful people, we should make way for Rombaut, a new player from Belgium. Founded in 2013 by Mats Rombaut, the shoe label is focused on being cool and green at the same time. A former student in economics and then fashion, the designer began his career as a press office apprentice before joining the team at Lanvin and then Damir Doma, leading him to become a vegetarian at the age of 21. Gradually, he adopted vegan ideologies and the inclination to create accessories in leather and fur became less appealing. How can he combine his love for fashion with saving the planet? Simple: he can set up his own label. He chose shoes since skins were used widely, defining his determination to revolutionise. Fully committed, he began designing models that were as ethical as possible, with a long-term purpose of producing biodegradable shoes. A dream he still has today but had to abandon at the time because of the results achieved; too arty, not durable enough and not entirely pleasing first creations. He then turned to other materials that were just as environmentally friendly but with more advanced finishes including tree bark and coconut shell, Pinatex (an eco-leather made from pineapple)... anything goes. And it worked! His unisex shoes (each model comes in sizes 36 to 46) gradually established themselves in all markets, capturing the hearts of a clientele affected by the cause they defend or simply by their style.
