ALEXANDER WANG Unisex
The Californian of Taiwanese heritage, Alexander Wang, has always known he was going to work in fashion. This resourceful self-starter devoted himself entirely to fashion, spending his summer holidays at London's Central Saint Martins, following a design programme. At 18, he moved to New York to attend the Parsons School of Design and gained experience through work placements with Vogue and Teen Vogue, alongside designers such as Marc Jacobs and Derek Lam. In 2005, he fulfilled his dream and launched his eponymous brand, introducing six unisex knitwear designs. In 2007, he launched his first collection of womenswear at New York Fashion Week. His runway was hailed by some of the biggest names in the industry and earned him the support of Anna Wintour, Diane von Furstenberg and Karl Lagerfeld. The collection's sophisticated sportswear aesthetic captivated the media and the young designer received a wealth of accolades: Vogue Fashion Fund/CFDA prize in 2008, winner of the Swarovski Designer of the Year Award and the Swiss Textile Award in 2009, Best Accessory Designer Award in 2011... And the ultimate recognition in 2012 when Balenciaga offered Alexander Wang the position of Creative Director. Devoting himself to the brand, he stayed with the prestigious fashion house until 2015. An adventurous socialite, Alexander designed his collections with "cool kids" in mind, who, like him, grew up amid the underground culture of America's hip-hop music scene. The signature look he defined as his "post-show model" is mainly reflected in slim silhouettes, a palette of sombre tones and utilitarian features. In terms of accessories, the Rocco, Diego and Prisma studded bags have become the label's iconic pieces. In parallel with his collections, Alexander Wang occasionally joined forces with other creative design teams to produce winning collaborations with brands such as Uniqlo, H&M and adidas Originals. Meanwhile, the Spring-Summer 2020 line is once again displaying a relaxed urban attitude with asymmetrical drapes, deconstructed shirts, cropped tops and oversize blazers cinched at the waist with belt bags. To complete this casual style, pairs of sharp ankle boots and satin sandals highlight the right dose of glamour. > View more
