The eyewear world is more entertaining than one might think, and Mykita is a living proof. Founded in 2003, the German brand takes its name from its unusual first address. Based in a former day care centre, called ‘Kita' in German, the label simply added a pronoun to become Mykita. A nod to its origins as well a clear course of action: to be fun and curious.
Launched by Moritz Krueger (who still leads the company as a creative director), Philipp Haffmans, Daniel Haffmans, and Harald Gottschling, a partnership established during their previous professional experience, Mykita has been based in Berlin since its inception, where its teams design and produce the models. Unable to find a factory capable of manufacturing the products nearby, the brand had no choice but to make their own items in-house. This obstacle turned out to be a blessing: by controlling the entire production chain, the label can invent even more quickly. Mykita Haus closely combines artisanal skills and new technologies to create innovations every season. With the help of its many partners and with the influence of its designers and craftspeople, it develops new materials and unique finishes for increasingly original glasses. The label got noticed at its debut shows in 2004, first in Tokyo, then in Paris.
Design also plays a key role in the success of Mykita's creations. Every pair of glasses is designed to reflect modern aesthetics, while somewhat setting aside the conventions of luxury as they are generally interpreted. Rather than pushing their logo, the German brand showcases the innovative material and the futuristic form of a frame never seen in the past.
