Bagheera is a tribute to the enlightened interaction between man and animal described by Rudyard Kipling in The Jungle Book, 1894: "A black shadow descended into the circle. It was Bagheera, the black panther, entirely black as ink, but with the markings of the panther appearing under certain lights like the pattern of moiré silk. Everyone knew Bagheera, and no one cared to cross his path, for he was as cunning as Tabaqui, as bold as the wild buffalo, and as fearless as the wounded elephant. But he had a voice as soft as wild honey flowing from a tree, and a skin softer than down."
