The story of the Tokyo-based brand, AMBUSH begins in 2008. In search of jewellery to accompany her husband Verbal's outfits, the self-taught designer, producer and hip-hop artist, Yoon Ahn, created a gold ring featuring a 'POW!' insignia. Success was instantaneous. Around the world, the hip-hop scene couldn't get enough of the American-Korean stylist's punk-rock-inspired creations. Kanye West, Jay-Z, A$AP Rocky and Rihanna loved the 18-carat gold chains and choker necklaces along with safety-pin shaped earrings. After numerous collaborations (Nike, Converse, Sacai, Louis Vuitton and more) AMBUSH enhanced its range in 2018 with a first collection of clothing. For her debut pieces, Yoon Ahn was inspired by 1970s reggae with knitted hats, fishnet tops and oversized volumes. Thereafter, she paid tribute to designer, Ray Petri, a pioneer of the Buffalo movement in the '80s and to Thomas Jerome Newton, the character played by David Bowie in The Man Who Fell to Earth. Fascinated by subcultures and underground movements, she made a point of advocating freedom of expression and gender fluidity in her collections. Besides, to better deconstruct stereotypes, she preferred to classify her pieces by chromatic variation rather than by gender. A winning move as fashionistas embraced her unisex creations, from utility trousers to graphic print t-shirts and oversized hoodies. Yoon Ahn takes us to the heart of Tokyo for AMBUSH's Spring-Summer 2020 collection, presenting a streetwear wardrobe with unstructured and layered concepts. Inspired by the world of motor sports, the designer produces metallic ensembles, workers' jumpsuits and technicolour biker jackets.
