"Sculpture". "Logo". "Cash Inside". At first glance, they may seem like innocuous terms. When you look closer, the ‘details' make all the difference and allow Virgil Abloh to raise the profile of his label, Off-White. Created in 2013, the Italy-based brand injected streetwear into the world of high fashion thanks to its original creations, symbolic to its founder. Abloh, a talented architecture and civil engineering graduate, exceled in everything he did. A DJ in his spare time, he previously collaborated with Kanye West (he was his art consultant for many years and was responsible for the Watch the Throne album cover).
After some fast-track training at Fendi in 2009 and gaining further wisdom from Louise Wilson (his highly respected former teacher at Central Saint Martins), Virgil Abloh began designing. His first company, Pyrex Vision, was established in 2012, where he bought stocks of Champion USA T-shirts, added screen prints and resold them at a premium price. A year later, he founded Off-White.
His most resounding success is nylon belts, inspired by industrial lashing straps with cam buckles, selling like hotcakes until this day. That's not all. Since he started out, the Chicago designer has been having fun adding words and slogans between quotation marks on his accessories and ready-to-wear pieces. Minimalist yet powerfully artistic, this ironic yet light-hearted concept worked wonders. His innovative collections were worn by the coolest models of the moment, Abloh had it all figured out. The label was an instant hit; popular collaborations with the likes of Nike, Moncler, IKEA and Jimmy Choo sprang up thanks to its unique and slightly daring nature. The Italian brand was unavoidable - just like its founder! In March 2018, in addition to his numerous endeavours, Virgil Abloh joined Louis Vuitton as the artistic director for the menswear collection. "Impressive!"> View more
