It all started with a sewing machine, the first on the island of Majorca, brought back from England by Antonio Fluxa, grandfather of Lorenzo and founder of the Camper brand. Coming from a family of shoemakers, the creator set up his business in 1975, after inheriting a shoe factory from his father. Although a first Barcelona boutique opened in 1981, it only expanded internationally in 1992, opening its first store in Paris.
Two years later, the Pelotas model enjoyed great success. The gently rounded sneaker has become the Iberian design house's signature, with over eleven million copies sold since its launch. In its quest for new ideas, the label then launched the Together movement in the mid-2000s, based around a series of collaborations. It started off with various interior designers, tasked with remodelling the brand's boutiques across the world. Then, from 2008, Camper partnered with designers to produce new models for the range.
In 2014, the label appointed Romain Kremer as Creative Director. A graduate from the École Supérieure des Arts Appliqués Duperré, he was no stranger to the company. In 2009, he previously collaborated with the brand, four years after winning the Special Jury Prize at the twentieth Hyères International Fashion and Photography Festival. After a brief stint in the men's studios at Mugler, he returned to reinvigorate Camper's image. Wishing to appeal especially to a younger clientele, he launched the CamperLab concept in 2017, offering a cooler range of designs. Exclusive and original materials, a wide selection of models and an aspiration to produce the hottest looks: it was a winning combination. Following his departure in June 2019, the company recruited Achilles Ion Gabriel, a young shoe designer from Finland. Before joining the Spanish brand, the artist notably worked for Marni and Sunnei designing shoes.
