SOLID HOMME
If the greatest designers of women's ready-to-wear are men, it appears that the opposite is also true. Since 1988, the Seoul-based designer, Woo Youngmi, has indeed been making her mark in men's fashion with the brand Solid Homme. A pioneer of the genre in Korea at the time, the designer studied fashion at Sungkyunkwan University in Seoul in the late 1980s. With an architect father, an art and piano teacher mother, she grew up in a culturally enriched environment. Since her mother designed her own clothes, from the age of 10, the designer-to-be assisted her. As gifted as she was ahead of her years, she quickly rose to fame after graduating, notably winning the Osaka International Fashion Prize in 1983. Five years later, she launched her brand.
Right from the start, her chic minimalist concept was a winner since it resonated with a client that takes care of himself and his attire. At that time, the country was going through a period of rapid economic expansion, greatly benefiting the label. Created for the modern man, the Solid Homme collection skilfully combines tailoring with a slightly sporty edge, produced in luxurious fabrics. The cuts are straightforward, classic, but not too much. A great combination.
Building on this success, Woo Youngmi launched the Wouyoungmi brand in 2002. Designed with a more European youthful market in mind, this label (pitched at affordable prices) was initially presented in Paris. After years spent designing her two lines alone, in 2014, the Korean stylist welcomed a new designer into her team. Her daughter, Katie Chung, trained at London's Central Saint Martins, is now Co-Creative Director for the brand. To sum up, a 100% male business, passed down from mother to daughter.
