Le Labo was born in Grasse, a little town in the South of France and a legend in the art of perfumery, but it was in New York that the label's founders opened their first boutique in 2006. Together, they invented a new language liberated from industry conventions and commercial strategies. Since its inception, Le Labo has made a point of embellishing daily life by creating unique sensorial experiences; for fifteen years, they've consistently created unexpected fragrances using only the very finest raw materials. Taking a "slow" approach to perfumery, Le Labo works with a community of artisans who each leave their mark upon the final product — from the perfumer, to the laboratory worker, to the person who cuts each rose.
The label's boutiques are designed in the spirit of a lab, offering clients a kind of backstage experience. Perfumers concoct scents in front of customers and even invite them to interact with the materials used, smelling each element in order to awaken the whole olfactive system. Each fragrance is named for its dominant note, followed by a number and a list of ingredients, with the client's name printed on the bottle. This made-to-order feel partially explains the success of best-selling fragrances like Santal 33, something of a modern icon, or Philippe Starck's favorite juice, Rose 31. Le Labo has been a part of the Estée Lauder group since 2014, where the brand continues to enchant the world with its perfumes, candles, and body lotions.
