      Paul Smith
Few designers can claim to have the steadfastness of Paul Smith. Having worked in the fashion industry for almost 50 years, the British designer heads a small company that doesn't know the meaning of failure. Its speciality is 'Classic with a twist'. In other words: basics that have been revitalised so that they never feel boring. Popping colours, fun prints, original cuts--Paul Smith's creations are instantly recognisable.
Born in Beeston, Nottinghamshire, Paul Smith was originally destined for a completely different activity: bicycle racing. From the ages of 12 to 18, the future designer took part in cycling competitions and trained religiously every weekend. An accident left him hospital-bound for several months, putting an end to his dream.
When he recovered, he found a new direction and met Pauline, who eventually became his wife. Having trained at the Royal College of Art in London, she taught him about the subtleties of clothing. Even today, she has a key role within the company. Paul Smith, having left school at the age of 15 with no qualifications, found work at a clothing warehouse. In 1970, he opened his first self-titled store, where he sold his creations along with pieces from more well-established brands. In 1976, the designer presented his first ready-to-wear men's collection during Paris Fashion Week. It was a great success, and the business slowly began to take off. In 1993, Paul Smith announced the creation of his first womenswear collection.
Renowned by the public and the fashion world as one of its biggest names, in 2011 he received the Outstanding Achievement Award at the British Fashion Awards.
