Recognized worldwide, Issey Miyake is considered an important creative and visionary, among his peers in the fashion world. Born in Hiroshima (Japan) on April 22, 1938, the designer witnessed the bombing of his city, which resulted in great losses and health issues. Nevertheless, his interest in fashion led him to study graphic design at the Tama University of Fine Arts in Tokyo. In 1965, he flew to Paris where he worked at prestigious fashion houses such as Givenchy and Guy Laroche and continued his training at the Parisian Chambre Syndicale de la Couture School to hone his skills. He returned to Japan, few year later, where he established Miyake Design Studio. In 1971, he presented his very first collection in New York and unveiled it once again in Paris in 1973. His novel stitching techniques known as pleating, particularly focused on the flexibility in movement for the wearer, as well as his construction of clothes, quickly made him a cutting-edge designer to watch. Throughout his career, he continued to experiment with cuts and different textiles, depicting a refined aesthetic, yet one that remains uniquely original. The blending of tradition and innovation was strongly carried in his lines of clothing and bags, as well as fragrances, lights and watches, that became brands on their own. The most famous? the Bao Bao line of bags produced from small triangular pieces, available in various colors and signature styles, as well as the Pleats Please line of clothing consisting of light, functional and beautiful pieces.> View more
