Does talent pass from generation to generation? Looking at the career of Simone Rocha, one might rightly ask the question. Daughter of designer John Rocha, a fashion star of the 80s awarded the British Fashion Award for Womenswear Designer in 1983 (Simone will win the same award in 2016), the designer has managed to build a style of her own, where powerful femininity is celebrated with plenty of tulle, embroidery, bows, and pearls. Born in Dublin in 1986, Simone Rocha did not necessarily aim for a career in fashion. But during her studies at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin, one of her professors encouraged her to take a module on the subject. In 2008, she continued her training at Central Saint Martins School in London, graduating in 2010. Impressed by her graduation collection, Fashion East offered her the opportunity to present her creations at London Fashion Week in September of the same year. Quickly, her style, which takes traditional feminine codes to better subvert them, hits the mark and Simone Rocha finds herself propelled to the forefront. Obsessed with the works of artist Louise Bourgeois, the designer primarily seeks to create functional clothing that naturally fits into the lives of those who wear them. Respected by her peers, she won her first British Fashion Award in 2013, that of Emerging Talent in the ready-to-wear category. The following year, she was awarded the New Establishment Award at the same ceremony. However, she would have to wait another two years before being presented with the Womenswear Designer of the Year Award at the 2016 ceremony.
