Fashion and Recycling: A Winning Combo

NEWS | March 17, 2020
To commemorate this year's World Recycling Day on March 18th, Printemps.com presents eco-friendly fashion and jewelry masterminds who have made recycled materials a cornerstone of their creative process.

The second most-polluting industry in the world, fashion has become increasingly conscious of environmental issues and is determined to implement innovative solutions. Rather than attempting to reinvent the wheel, a growing number of designers and brands are choosing to use recycled materials for their creations, whether it's shoes, jewelry, or clothes. "Reduce, reuse, recycle" comes to life.

Known for being particularly advanced in terms of sustainable development and environmental causes, Scandinavians are leading the charge with some of the industry's most recycling-enthused creators. Three Danish labels are excellent examples — Ganni, with their recycled nylon Baum und Pferdgarten, offering dresses, blouses, and leggings made of recycled polyester, and Organic Basics, whose pieces are made of recycled nylon, cashmere, and wool.

Committed to preserving our oceans, French men's bathing-suit brand Apnée is also getting on board, producing its pieces from recycled ocean plastics. It's a fantastic way of drawing attention to the marine initiative, especially given that 8 million tons of plastics are tossed in the ocean every year. Indeed, according to the UN, our oceans may contain more plastic than fish by 2050.

Ethical and responsible, eco-friendly values are also on the rise in accessories. Vegan shoe brand Rombaut has been making its kicks from vegetable fibers and recycled PVC, much like labels Yatay and Veja, who are using materials derived from plastic bottles and textile scraps. Occasionally taken to task for a lack of transparency on its metal and jewel sourcing, the jewelry industry is keeping pace as well. Made by hand in Sweden, the minimalist pieces by All Blues, founded in 2010, are fashioned in recycled sterling silver and gold vermeil. This circular approach has also been adopted by creator Ariana Boussard-Reifel, constantly pushing for greater experimentation and innovation in fashion.
