In an era of mass consumerism and diminishing global resources, Hillary Taymour brings us alternative fashion with her brand Collina Strada, founded in New York in 2008. Far from delivering moral and apocalyptic speeches on ecological issues, the designer instead exhibits an upbeat optimistic world, suggesting that the future can be as radiant and festive as her garments. ‘No one is going to change the way they live if it isn't presented in a fun way,' she says. Actively involved in campaigning about environmental issues, Hillary Taymour wishes to raise awareness by encouraging introspection in a humorous and thoughtful manner through colourful creations with fluid and voluminous cuts. At Collina Strada, sustainability is far from boring!
The collections are produced in organic fibres such as orange peel, textiles made from dairy products and roses spun into cellulose. Offcuts and unsold recycled fabrics are also used. With this in mind, Collina Strada joined the GOLD Foundation programme working in Ghana, where fifteen million garments are sent every week. To reduce the waste accumulating on the African plains or thrown into the ocean, the label collects piles of t-shirts to transform into its designs, giving them a second life.
As a CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalist, Hillary Taymour has been recognised for her luxurious, grungy aesthetic and commitment to the environment. Winning her peers' approval, Collina Strada became the darling brand of New York Fashion Week. Her runway shows are a new opportunity to demonstrate her ability to bring art and humanity together, featuring models of all ages and sizes. Among them are expectant mothers and children, symbolising the future and how important it is for us to fight for a better planet to live on. Reminiscent of Jean-Paul Gaultier's flamboyant energy and Vivienne Westwood's passionate free spirit, Collina Strada's silhouettes are steeped in psychedelic, arty appeal that is sure to impress.
