The success story of Renzo Rosso is a fascinating one. The son of a farmer, he started out making (by hand) and selling his first pair of jeans as a teenager. He later graduated from the Istituto Marconi in Padua and joined the Moltex group in the 1970s, then owned by Adriano Goldschmied. Specialized in denim, the company was one of the most important in the sector in Italy at the time. At only 23 years old and thanks to a loan of 4,000 euros from his father, he invested in the company and became a 40% owner. A few years later, in 1978, the duo renamed the brand Diesel. Despite the skeptics, the entrepreneurs believed that there is an opportunity for a luxury premium denim brand to compete with the likes of Lee Cooper and Levi's. In 1985, Renzo Rosso bought out the rest of his partner's shares and became the sole owner. Even though the brand's initial signature style was high quality jeans that looked distressed and worn, it gradually expanded its collections to include t-shirts, shoes, various accessories, and perfumes. It continued its growth by acquiring in the early 2000s labels with a strong creative edge as well as independent ones. In 2008, Renzo Rosso founded the OTB (Only The Brave) group, which now holds majority shares in Maison Margiela, Marni, and Viktor and Rolf. > View more
