Eager to pay homage to the shoes his Spanish grandmother used to wear, Julien Martinez created his own brand of hand laced shoe designs in 2017. More precisely, after visiting a handmade lacing workshop in Alicante, Spain, four years earlier, the Franco-Spanish designer came up with the idea of launching his own label. A former graduate in industrial design, now heading a design office specialising in footwear, Julien Martinez creates sandals, heels and mules that combine tradition with modernity and heritage with elegance. The result of this unique craftsmanship is that all Martinez shoes are woven by hand using traditional techniques, crafted from local leathers and guaranteeing exceptional comfort. One of these processes is known as "Rejilla" similar to wicker work and ideal for hot weather. Another is called "Damas", where leather strips are tightly interwoven, making it perfect for the cold season. The brand's signatures include braiding in warm colours, evoking Iberian and sunny Mediterranean landscapes. Moreover, Subtle touches of gold using metallic leathers and platinum heels, all mounted on a more Parisian style platform, offer an exciting mix of genres. The shoes are named Tenerife, Menorca, Mahon and Sardinia, after places in the designer's homeland. To create his collections, Julien Martinez is inspired by actresses from Pedro Almodovar's films such as Carmen Maura, Penelope Cruz or Rossi de Palma, brilliantly illustrating the powerful, independent and sometimes eccentric women for whom Martinez shoes are designed. As for the brand's future, the designer has announced that he would like to collaborate with different artists, sculptors and craftsmen, aiming to expand his collection to include art. He also hopes to develop his business to make it more environmentally friendly. Watch this space...> View more
