To ensure proper candle burning, it should be placed vertically on a heat-resistant surface, away from heat sources and drafts. Protect the surface underneath as it can be damaged by the heat of the container or melting wax in the case of containerless candles (tapers).
During the first use, for optimal burning, let the candle burn until the entire top surface is completely melted evenly. This prevents "tunneling," where the wax only melts in the center, creating a hollow around the wick, limiting its fuel and causing incomplete burning.
It is recommended not to burn the candle for more than 4 consecutive hours (unless stated otherwise on the label or packaging), or at least until the liquid wax reaches the container's edges.
Keep the wick clean, not too long, and as straight as possible at all times. It may shift or tilt when the wax is liquid; in that case, gently recenter it after extinguishing the flame.
If black smoke appears, trim the wick. Its length should not exceed 6 millimeters. Longer wicks tend to curl, causing an unstable, wide, flickering flame, producing smoke, and hindering even burning.
To trim it correctly, extinguish the candle and let the wax completely cool before handling it.
