Mother-daughter duos have already proven to be popular in the fashion world. So, it's no surprise that the handbag brand Montunas, created by former model Elke Ruge and her daughters Elena and Amanda Hawila, was a resounding success. (Re)launched in 2017, the brand's history goes even further back. During the early 1990s, Elke Ruge was searching for a handbag, both sturdy and practical for carrying her cameras, sketchbooks, nappies (she also had a son) and so on. Finding nothing to fit the description, she decided to have some models made, receiving compliments from her friends and marking the beginning of the brand. Already fans of their mother's accessories, Elena and Amanda had one wish: to turn it into a business. Some years later — by the time Elena graduated from Princeton and worked for a tech start-up, and Amanda gained marketing experience at Burberry and Armani — Elke Ruge finally agreed.
Together, they created an aesthetic, name and concept. Their aesthetic is: timeless. None of the brand's bags use metal which, according to the mother-daughter trio, ages the silhouettes of the accessories. The name comes from none other than the nickname given to Elke by her grandmother during childhood. Full of energy, Elke was called ‘Montunas' meaning ‘wild and free'. And finally, the concept. Made in a small Spanish factory just south of Seville, the handbags from the London/Costa Rican label (Elke Ruge was born and raised in Costa Rica before moving to England) celebrate this dual heritage. One collection is made with ethically sourced vegetable-tanned leather, with tropical forest print designs in the lining. The other uses an acrylic base with structural accessories, crafted to resemble the orchid flowerpots that bloom in the family's Costa Rican home. A fun and charming line that is already making its mark; recently worn by Meghan Markle, it is sure to become a definite favourite for many.> View more
