Some nominations are more opportune than others, and Daniel Lee's at Bottega Veneta is certainly one of them. Creative Director of the Italian fashion house since June 2018, the young Brit (aged 32 on joining) is re-injecting a little artistic flourish into this modest luxury giant. An understated genius, he produces unusual and highly acclaimed designs, preferring to let them speak for themselves. And they are, by no means lost for words! Stars of their own Instagram account (@newbottega), the brand's shoe, handbag and accessory designs have established themselves as the latest it-bags and it-shoes. Countless online comments and hashtags are further proof of the ingenuity to appoint this designer, who previously worked for Margiela, Balenciaga and Celine after originally training at Central Saint Martins. If fashion is above all a matter of style, accessories remain the vital key to success. Even though Bottega Veneta built a solid reputation with the label's signature Intrecciato bag and shoe models, it became clear that it needed a little boost at the start of 2019. This renaissance has a tiny element of déjà vu as his predecessor, the gifted Tomas Maier, used the same magic over the brand when appointed in 2001. At the time, the label was entering the Kering group and needed to get the business back on track. Founded in 1966 in Vicenza, by Michele Taddei and Renzo Zengiaro, Bottega Veneta (meaning "Venetian Shop" in Italian) was built on four pillars: style, practicality, craftsmanship and the use of exceptional materials. With the Pouch, heels with deep uppers along with quilted and braided mules, Daniel Lee maintains these codes to perfection.
