Few shoes are as disagreeing as Birkenstock. And yet, launched in the 18th century, these orthopaedic sandals continue to enjoy unparalleled success from their beginnings. The reason? Their unmatched comfort.
It all began in 1774 when Johann Adam Birkenstock established himself as a shoemaker in Langen-Bergheim. Twenty-two years later, the first flexible anatomical insoles were produced in Frankfurt under the direction of another Birkenstock family member, Konrad. Thanks to his grandson, Karl, the brand achieved global recognition. The family-run company developed several models over the years and produced a whole series of Birkenstock seminars to train foot specialists. In 1964, the German designed the classic sandal we know today. Using the already proven Fussbett (the "foot bed"), he added a mix of latex, cork and jute under the sole, which he then covered with a leather insole. Even though the shoe design was a success, it took few years to finally become the fashion hit it is today. All it took was for Paco Rabanne and Narciso Rodriguez models to step out in the classic footwear at the end of the ‘90s. Celine (during the Phoebe Philo era), Rick Owens and Valentino followed. Proof of its flourishing success, the brand was in the prominent position of turning down VETEMENTS and Supreme in 2018. At the same time, the most stylish actresses and influencers were spotted wearing the shoes. Birkenstock's great appeal lies in their manufacture. Mostly made from natural raw materials, they are far more environmentally friendly than most shoes. Known for their exceptionally high quality, they also fall into the "sustainable" product category due to their long-term durability. CEO, Olivier Reichert ensures that these key assets are firmly embedded into the brand. His motto: "The product and nothing but the product" and kiss goodbye to extortionate marketing costs.
