If Yves Saint Laurent yearned for having invented jeans, the Marques'Almeida duo can truly boast about how they brilliantly revisit denim, season after season. Founded in 2011 by Marta Marques and Paulo Almeida, the brand is the very essence of effortless, raw and unpretentious style. Halfway between irreverent punk and baroque sportswear, the London-based label takes inspiration from '90s grunge to create this luxury streetwear style. Their iconic all-over denim look was adopted by pop stars Rihanna and Beyoncé and their creations combining silk, taffeta and frayed jeans earned them the celebrated LVMH Prize in 2015. Trained in Portugal, the two founders finished their studies in London, at the famous Central Saint Martins. Between them, they doubled up their experience, working with Preen and Vivienne Westwood before teaming up together. The label's advocacy of diversity and inclusion was particularly illustrated when a "casting party" was organised for its Autumn-Winter 2019 show, by asking its Instagram followers to take part with this message: "Whether you define as a boy, girl, trans or non-binary, we want you to be a part of the M'A Family." For their Spring-Summer 2020 collection, the two designers have continued this message and have literally given the floor to women by interviewing their runway models and broadcasting it on giant screens. Touching accounts that demonstrate the commitment that goes into a show, reflecting the values of the brand. On the product side, Marta Marques and Paulo Almeida are also seeing the bigger picture: their clothing is expanding with balloon dresses, XXL skirts and oversized coats that are sure to turn heads. Add feather accessories, raw-edged jeans and shiny satin for a blend of style statements that can only succeed.
