3 Movies reminiscent of Summer

NEWS | August 3, 2020
Summer 85, by François Ozon
A 1980s love story on the English Channel, a legendary surf documentary and the remake of a chlorinated cult film...Printemps.com selects three sun-splashed feature films to watch and watch again.

Summer 85: A Retro Love Affair

This summer must-see weaves the touching love story of two young men living in a working-class port in Upper Normandy in the summer of 1985. That same summer, the Cure's "In Between Days" echoed across the waves of the Channel and became the anthem of a generation. Carried by actors Félix Lefebvre and Benjamin Voisin, the film transports us into the past with its perfect retro aesthetics, accentuated by the analog film used by François Ozon. This tale of a holiday fling was also an official selection at this year's Cannes film festival.

Released in France on July 14, 2020.

The Endless Summer (1966):

The Endless Summer follows Robert August and Mike Hynson, two hip Californian surfers, in their quest for an endless summer. Boards in hand, the two friends travel to beaches from Australia to Ghana, Tahiti to Hawaii, all under the lens of director Bruce Brown. This iconic documentary on surf culture captures the best-known spots on the planets and features athletes and surfers that have become heroes in the industry, from Phil Edwards to Miki Dora, alias Da Cat, one of the California coast's most famous representatives.

A Bigger Splash (2015): a dive back into the Pool

Luca Guadagnino's been inspired by summertime since long before he brought us Call Me By Your Name. His 2015 remake of Jacques Deray's legendary 1969 La Piscine assembles a brilliant quartet to pay tribute to the French classic, featuring Ralph Fiennes, Dakota Johnson, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Tilda Swinton. A killer ensemble to revisit this timeless thriller, which sails the troubled waters of desire.
