They say lightning never strikes twice in one place, but Hannah Weiland may not entirely agree. And for good reason. Not yet 30, the British designer, founder of the Shrimps brand, has already made her mark on fashion twice. The first, just after the launch of her label in 2013, when she introduced multicoloured faux fur coats. Ethical, chic and original, these overcoats sent the fashion world into a frenzy, celebrating these both stylish and warm garments while enjoying the brand's eccentricity. Christened Shrimps after the designer's own nickname as a youngster, the label is indeed endowed with an aesthetic that's easy to spot at first glance. Within a few months, the brand became the figurehead of English chic, best addressing fans of Margot Tenenbaum's spark and quirky style, swinging between kitsch and elegant, long before Alessandro Michele sets foot in Gucci. The second time Shrimps got people talking is with an entirely different accessory, a handbag design. Although Hannah Weiland already tried to launch into the synthetic leather bag market a few years prior, this time she took a chance on another medium. She chose pearls (costume jewellery, of course).
Feminine, understated and luxurious... as soon as the Antonia bag was released, it caused quite a stir due to its versatility. The perfect companion for a wedding, girls' night out, Sunday brunch or even visiting the mother-in-law, this little box-shaped accessory suits any occasion. Faced with its resounding success, Hannah Weiland created its equally structured friends. From the Dolly (in tribute to Dolly Parton) to the Dawson and the Quinn, this family of 'beaded bags' as the Brits refer to them, has grown considerably.
The designer isn't resting on her laurels. Having built her reputation by 'doing the fashion double', as a graduate from the London College of Fashion and finalist of the BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund 2017, she is using her talents to serve the planet. A committed environmentalist, she works with the One Tree Planted association, which promotes reforestation, planting a tree for every bag sold. Saving the environment has never been so cool. > View more
