Model, actress, and designer since 2007, Liya Kebede founded the brand lemlem, meaning “to blossom” in the Amharic language. Deeply attached to her native Ethiopia, the founder values traditional weaving techniques and artisanal production to encourage the country's economic independence. lemlem champions African creation by transmitting and preserving its traditions and the beauty of its culture. “The idea is to inspire others to see Africa as a quality resource for artisans, not just a place to outsource to because of cheap labor,” says Liya Kebede.
Women's empowerment is at the core of the brand’s values, with the mission to help them by donating 5% of sales revenue to the lemlem Foundation, a non-profit organization working for women's empowerment. In 2015, lemlem opened a production center in Kenya, where materials and prints are made to complement the collection of woven clothing. Handcrafted from locally sourced cotton and colorful embroidered threads, the brand’s lightweight pieces perfectly combine ethics, comfort, and style. Airy caftans, bohemian crochet dresses, jersey jumpsuits, and summer silk stoles have already won over influencers Leandra Medine and Eva Chen, who showcase them on their Instagram profiles wearing these light silhouettes. Rich in authenticity and history, lemlem creations come in various geometric patterns, stripes, and hues to suit all tastes and desires.
