Balenciaga and Vibram: Bold Design for the Fearless Trendsetter

NEWS | November 26, 2020
Following the success of the Triple S, Balenciaga has teamed up with Vibram. Together, they've dreamed up new styles that even longtime trendsetter Rihanna has been quick to sport.

Shoes are a real playground for designers, with each passing season bringing us models that take us by surprise with their technical innovation and avant-garde designs. This winter's collaboration between Balenciaga and Vibram is no exception, and their latest breakthroughs are changing what we can expect from our kicks.

Vibram, a French brand specialized in technical sole design, provided the inspiration with its famous Five Fingers model and its compartmentalization of each toe. The design provides the sensation of being barefoot, allowing for the freest and most natural movement. In partnering with Vibram, Balenciaga is surfing the ever-growing minimalist, barefoot trend, combining contemporary design, performance, and of course comfort.

First, the Tabi de Margiela footwear phenomenon featured the famous split toe; in fact, it's the same house where Demna Gvasalia, Balenciaga's current artistic director, made his debut. Now, shoes that follow the contours of every toe are the latest must-have. Proof? Rihanna herself has already been photographed in them, and that's a vote of confidence we trust. By all accounts, these new "toe shoes" are poised to become an it-item. Ergonomic, lightweight, and eco-friendly, their flexible soles lend them a futuristic look that's enhanced by the recycled mesh that forms the shoe's top section (reminiscent of one of the brand's other famous designs, the Speed Trainer's sock-shoe). All this thanks to the cutting-edge influence of Georgian designer Demna Gvasalia, whose creative approach is marked by innovation, collaboration, and experimentation.
