Founded in 2016 by two London friends, Lily Atherton Hanbury and Katya Shyfrin, Le Monde Béryl reinterprets the traditional slippers of Venetian gondoliers. Also known as "furlanes", they were born at the end of World War II in the Friuli region of northeastern Italy. Thin and flat-soled, the shoes were then marketed in Venice where they were adopted by gondoliers who appreciated their comfort and durability. Indeed, these were equipped with soles made from recycled bicycle tires, a gripping material that prevented damage to the varnish of the boats. Thus inspired by their history, the two creators imagine contemporary models, handcrafted by Florentine artisans using ancestral techniques. In terms of materials, the brand collaborates with Cloth Collective, a British company specializing in the production of sustainable textiles. In velvet, satin, or suede, the collection features colorful shoes with impeccable finishes. To add a touch of glamour to their look, some of them are even adorned with jewelry, like small sparkling crystals. Le Monde Béryl, or the elegance of Italian craftsmanship.
