Wes Anderson's 3 Cult Classics

Just as for long-awaited films like Dune or the next James Bond, we'll have to wait a little while longer for Wes Anderson's latest, The French Dispatch. In the meantime, Printemps.com has chosen three classics signed by the American director, whose next flick starts production in Spring 2021.

The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)

In this classic comedy, awarded an Oscar for best original screenplay, Wes Anderson teleports us to a whimsically bourgeois Manhattan and introduces us to a family unlike any other. The eccentric Tenenbaums feature past child prodigies played by Gwyneth Paltrow, Ben Stiller, and Luke Wilson. Twenty years after their parent's divorce, the whole family once again gathers under the same roof at the behest of their father, Royal, who pretends to be suffering from a serious illness. This quirky family saga has since become as iconic as its characters' preppy wardrobes, which also inspired some of Alessandro Michele's designs for Gucci and Lacoste.

The Darjeeling Limited (2007)

In this feature film, we follow the journey of three brothers: Peter (Adrien Brody), Jack (Jason Schwartzman), and Francis (Owen Wilson). As the characters embark upon a pilgrimage to India one year after the death of their father, Wes Anderson immerses us in a feel-good family therapy session. Part comical adventure and part spiritual quest, in seeking to find each other, each of the brothers ends up finding himself. An ode to escape and letting go that feels fitting in our times. All aboard the Darjeeling Limited!

The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)

Welcome to Zubrowka, an imaginary country that's home to a palace as charming as it is old-fashioned. In this splendid, rose-tinged castle, rich aristocrats and their eccentric friends meet in an impeccably retro aesthetic. Orchestrating the perfect hotel experience and watching over the hotel, the mysterious concierge M. Gustave, played by Ralph Fiennes, is assisted by his faithful bellman Zero Mustapha. Sweeping awards at the Oscars and the Berlin Film Festival, the film unveils a five-star cast and a host of memorable cameos that include appearances by Tilda Swinton, Adrien Brody, Jude Law, and Léa Seydoux. Its lasting impression is also thanks to the stunning Art Deco set design, from which Wes Anderson also drew inspiration in designing the Prada Foundation's Bar Luce in Milan in 2015.
