A citizen of the world, Sander Lak is a designer whose aesthetic is a result of constant exposure to diverse cultures. He was born in Sultanat, Brunei and spent his childhood between Gabon, the Netherlands and Scotland. Named after his parents' first names, his label Sies Marjan launched in New York in 2016. A magician with colours, Lak, who gained notoriety for his collections with pop tones and varying textures, almost followed a completely different career path. He pursued fashion after his application to film school was rejected.
Far from being an amateur when he founded the label, the young designer trained under Louise Wilson at Central Saint Martins (London) and already had a solid reputation as a stylist among several renowned fashion houses. Balmain, 3.1 Phillip Lim and even Dries van Noten were listed on the Dutch designer's impressive CV. Considering his label's popularity (he received the CFDA Emerging Designer Award in 2018), the designer also ventured into menswear with his first Men's collection in Paris last June.
His luxurious and colourful designs initially stand out somewhat among the monochrome New York Fashion Week runways. Being way ahead of his time, he crafts a fluid style, mixing the most daring prints with the most unique materials. For Spring-Summer 2020, the designer experiments once more with draped silk cuts, crocodile scales embossed onto duchess satin, and snake prints on delicate fabrics and denim. The varied collection also embraces all the colours of the rainbow, from indigo to canary yellow and forest green, mauve and red. There's bound to be something for everyone.> View more
