To ensure proper candle burning, it should be placed upright on a heat-resistant surface, away from heat sources and drafts. It's essential to protect the surface underneath as it can be damaged by the heat of the container or melted wax in the case of containerless candles (tapers).
For the first use, to optimize burning, the candle should be allowed to burn until the entire top surface is evenly melted. This prevents "tunneling," where the wax only melts in the center, creating a hollow around the wick, limiting its fuel and causing incomplete burning.
It's recommended not to burn the candle for more than 4 consecutive hours (unless stated otherwise on the label or packaging), or at least until the liquid wax reaches the container's edges.
The wick should always be clean, not too long, and as straight as possible. It may move or tilt when the wax is liquid; in this case, gently recenter it after extinguishing the flame.
If black smoke appears, it indicates the wick needs trimming. Its length should not exceed 6 millimeters. Long wicks tend to curl, causing an unstable, wide, flickering flame, generating smoke and hindering even burning.
To trim it correctly, the candle must be extinguished, and the wax left to cool completely before handling.
