Few brands are as rooted in the history of the British kingdom as Barbour. Founded in 1894 by John Barbour, who opened his first shop in South Shields (England) that year, the British brand is renowned for its pieces that are as durable as they are emblematic of country chic. Family-owned (and still run today by the direct heirs of the founder), the label quickly made a name for itself in the outerwear market, both waterproof and functional. A favorite of motorcyclists since 1936, the brand also made its mark during World War II, dressing members of the country's submarine services. But while its influence spans the ages, it also penetrates all social classes: in 1974, the brand received its first royal appointment, awarded by the Duke of Edinburgh. Two more would follow, in 1982 and 1987, from Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles. In 1983, the Beaufort jacket was born. Made from waxed canvas and lined with the iconic Barbour family tartan, this piece is still one of the greatest classics of the British house today. Like all the other jackets from the brand, it is still handmade in the Simonside factory where the brand established itself in 1981. But although skilled at preserving its heritage, the brand does not hesitate to offer more modern pieces and to engage with popular culture, notably dressing James Bond in his Beacon jacket in 'Skyfall' and collaborating with Alexa Chung in 2019. In 2015, the brand also made its debut at London Fashion Week, showcasing more contemporary designs that are still deeply rooted in the British heritage of the house.
