Its launch was an event for the ages. Yves Saint Laurent wanted to create a fragrance that would evoke the East, and so he created his interpretation of the spirit of imperial China with all its mysteries and exoticism. A provocative name, Opium, synonymous with drugs, passion and enchantment. It was the first French fragrance to be highly concentrated, akin to American perfumery, and it boasts an impressive fragrance trail that has endured since its creation in 1977. There's a burst of mandarin, bergamot and lily of the valley, followed by heart notes of jasmine, carnation and myrrh. A touch of vanilla, amber and opoponax round out the scent, giving it a dark, bewitching feel.

OLFACTION
The burst of Mandarin, Bergamot, and Lily of the Valley reveals heart notes of Jasmine, Carnation, and Myrrh. Then Vanilla, Amber, Opoponax, and Patchouli blend onto the skin in a troubling and feverish trail.
THE BOTTLE
The Opium Eau de Toilette bottle takes the form of an inrô, a small case that Oriental warriors wore at their waist to protect their most precious belongings.
