Qasimi, founded in 2015 by Khalid al-Qasimi, is a socially-engaged London-based label born of hybrid influences. Having emigrated from the United Arab Emirates to the UK as a child, Khalid al-Qasimi's youth was marked by the Gulf War, a fact that's subtly evident in his collections' military accents. Visualizing the body as a landscape to be draped in form and color, concerned with imagining pieces that carry strong messages, the brand stands out for its urban, architectural style. With nuance being central to the look, attention is placed on sophisticated sobriety and nods to the natal region of the designer and his sister, Hoor al-Qasimi, an artist and conservator for the prestigious Charjah Biennale. Indeed, after Khalid's passing in 2019, his sister rose to the task at hand and took the reins, holding fast to the desire to keep their common values and heritage alive. Maintaining the intention of peacefully questioning the world around them, just as her brother did in 2017 by backing Black Lives Matter, and in 2018 with his collaboration with the non-profit organization War Child, Qasimi continues to produce highly wearable and modern lines for men and women. Here, sharp lines are balanced with softness — a mix of politics and poetry, activism and temperance. From oversized dresses to revisited polo shirts in transparent fabric, everything at Qasimi is eminently marked by the contemporary world. While it's something of a newcomer on the scene, it's long since established itself as a heavy hitter.> View more
