MOTHER OF PEARL

While still a very young brand, Mother of Pearl has already gone through several changes. Founded in 2002 by Maia Norman, the British label first made a name for itself as a small label with a poetic title and designs, often embellished with...well, pearls. Six years later, Amy Powney, a young graduate from Kingston University, joined the company. After interning at Giles Deacon, she was working part-time at Marios Schwab when she saw the opportunity to earn some money at MOP. Originally cutting fabrics, making tea and taking on other office tasks, the British designer began to flourish; so much so that in 2015, Maia Norman gave her half of the company and appointed her creative director. The brand then entered its second phase.
Under Powney's leadership, Mother of Pearl focused on sustainability and simplicity. The young designer described its aesthetic as "something sporty, something girly, something granny". In 2017, the label won the BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund Award, allowing it to push its vision even further. The next year, it launched the ‘No Frills' collection, delivering a line of classic pieces that followed strict economic and environmental regulations. The collection, still available, aims to help slow down flashy and sometimes frenzied consumerism while keeping in line with the label's arty and feminine look. Mother of Pearl continues to provide sophisticated and snug pieces for Spring-Summer 2020, keeping in mind the clientele who wears them, not their spectators. With their light dresses, gauzy low-cut blouses and sleek trousers, the collection encompasses all it takes to unite this small world.
