The house of Balmain is renowned for its elegance, structured and ultra-feminine silhouettes. Since its opening in 1945 by the designer Pierre Balmain, the label debuts each season women's pieces characterized by a chic and modern style. It all began at the end of the Second World War when the designer joined Lucien Lelong. There he met Christian Dior, and gained recognition, notably for his "Petit Profit" dress, a creation that the artistic director didn't care much for, but which finally proved to be a hit. For a while, he contemplated the idea to launch a line with his friend Dior, but eventually ventured on his own in 1945. Success was immediate! While Paris was being rebuilt, Pierre Balmain's garments for women were a breath of fresh air and optimism. Ultra-refined, the "Jolie Madame" style brought delicacy back into fashion and was quickly rivalled. When he died of cancer in 1982, Pierre Balmain was considered one of the greatest legends of the last century. Several designers succeeded him, but it wasn't until 1992 and the arrival of Oscar de la Renta that the label regained its glory. The first American to be entrusted with the artistic direction of a French house, he was able to capture the essence of the founding couturier each season, debuting collections that blended tradition and modernity. Following his departure in 2002, the Balmain women's ready-to-wear went through another period of decline until Christophe Decarnin came on board in 2006. He rejuvenated the label with Rock and rebellious aesthetics, introducing jeans inspired by the world of motorcycles and jackets with shoulder pads. In 2011, Olivier Rousteing continued to combine an ultra-modern vibe with the brand's heritage. Cool, feminine and confident, the Balmain woman's look blends elegance and originality, paired with timeless handbags such as the B-Buzz.> View more
