The Y/Project story is not a common one. Still relatively unknown by the public until a few seasons ago, the French label has taken up residence at the forefront of the fashion scene under the leadership of Creative Director, Glenn Martens. Before his arrival in 2013, the label already had its own past, followers and image established. Founded in 2010 by Yohan Serfaty (also Creative Director) and Gilles Elalouf, the brand began by offering original menswear designs with a bold aesthetic. Following Yohan Serfaty's death in 2013, Glenn Martens was named as his successor. This Bruges-born designer didn't intend to follow a career in fashion. After studying Interior Design, he went to Antwerp in 2004 to visit the Royal Academy of Fine Arts building. Falling under its charm, he applied and was accepted. He left in 2009, ranking at the top of his class. Initially recruited by Jean Paul Gaultier, he was appointed as Yohan Serfaty's first assistant before freelancing for several brands, including Weekday and Hugo Boss. In 2012, he launched his eponymous womenswear label. The brand produced collections over three seasons, before he was recruited by Y/Project.
From this moment on, things moved quickly. In addition to introducing women's collections, the label had, most importantly, become a key player in unisex clothing. And for good reason. Almost half of Glenn Martens' creations today are gender-fluid, intended for an eclectic clientele, covering the most classic to the most eccentric designs. The idea? Clothing that speaks to everyone, so everyone can find a style that suits them. A triumph for individual expression, precisely positioned, in line with the times. Remaining true to the aesthetic created by the label's founder, he adds his own personal twists... and it works. Finalist of the LVMH Prize in 2016, Y/Project won the prestigious ANDAM Grand Prize in 2017. An ascent not faltering anytime soon, knowing that the brand is diversifying into the accessory world.
