Founded in 1952 by Hubert Taffin de Givenchy, the house of Givenchy soon earned its place in the exclusive world of haute-couture. That same year, the brand's outstanding debut collection of stylish blouses and flowy skirts, or "separates", was an instant success.
Praised for its elegant yet effortless aesthetic, the pioneering Parisian brand disrupted the stylistic codes of that time. Since the couturier stepped down in 1995, several famous designers have taken over as artistic directors, including John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Riccardo Tisci, or Claire Waight Keller, who designed Meghan Markle's wedding dress. In 2020, Matthew M.Williams - former creative director for Lady Gaga and Kanye West - followed in their footsteps.
Airy and comfortable, Givenchy's creations are also sophisticated and refined, such as the brand's short white cotton dress from the "Arthouse Beauty" collection, with its kimono-like silhouette. This Givenchy Paris dress boasts a minimalist cut elevated by the bold shapes of its well-defined shoulders and its tie belt.
Keep the look casual by opting for loafers in shiny black leather with a gold metal chain detail, or dress it up by choosing a pair of carved-heel, asymmetrical mule sandals. To accessorize, add the iconic ID93 Bag in black leather - its braided top handle and soft lines perfectly compliment the structure of the dress.
No one does a little black dress like Givenchy. Even Audrey Hepburn would agree. One of the brand's first muses, the Parisian fashion house famously dressed the actress in Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961).
The rest is history. In the decades since the film's release, Givenchy has continued to design memorable little black dresses with an understated yet undeniably retro touch. On the one hand the sleeveless sheath dress with a dainty shawl collar exudes a genuine romantic feel. On the other hand, the subtilty of the silk-lined woolen black dress with its short sleeves and detachable cape is reminiscent of films of that era.
