Few designers can boast of having as much consistency as Paul Smith. In the fashion industry for nearly fifty years, the British designer heads a small business that knows no crisis. His niche? 'Classic with a twist.' In other words: reimagined basics to never fall into boredom. Pop colors, fun prints, original cuts, the creations of the British designer are recognizable at first glance. Born in Beeston, Nottinghamshire (United Kingdom), Paul Smith initially aimed for a completely different career: cycling. From the age of 12 to 18, the future designer participated in competitions and trained religiously every weekend. But an accident at his majority immobilized him for several months and ended his dream. Upon leaving the hospital, he changed circles and met Pauline at a party, who would become his wife. Trained at the Royal College of Art in London, she also taught him to understand the subtleties of clothing. Even today, she holds a key position within the company. Having left school at the age of 15 without any qualifications, Paul Smith was employed by a clothing warehouse. In 1970, he opened his first eponymous store, where he sold his creations as well as pieces from some already well-established brands. It wasn't until 1976 that the designer presented his first men's ready-to-wear line at Paris Fashion Week. Success was on the agenda, and the business gradually took off. By 1993, the designer announced the creation of a first women's line. Recognized by the public and the fashion industry as one of its main players, he notably received the Outstanding Achievement Award at the 2011 British Fashion Awards.
