To ensure proper candle burning, it should be placed upright on a heat-resistant surface, away from heat sources and drafts. Protect the surface underneath as it can be damaged by the heat of the container or melted wax, especially for containerless candles (tapers).
During the first use, for optimal burning, let the candle burn until the entire top surface is evenly melted to prevent tunneling, where wax only melts in the center, creating a tunnel around the wick, limiting its fuel and causing incomplete burning.
Avoid burning the candle for more than 4 consecutive hours (unless stated otherwise on the label or packaging), or at least until the liquid wax reaches the container's edges.
Keep the wick clean, not too long, and as straight as possible. It may shift or lean when the wax is liquid; gently recenter it after extinguishing the flame.
If black smoke appears, trim the wick. Its length should not exceed 6 millimeters. Long wicks tend to curl, causing an unstable, wide, flickering flame, producing smoke and hindering even burning.
To trim it properly, extinguish the candle and let the wax completely cool before handling it.
