Embodiment of the American dream, Coach was founded in 1941 in New York. At that time, the brand led by the couple Miles and Lilian Cahn was a discreet family workshop made up of six artisans specialized in the handcrafted production of lighters, cigar cases, and wallets. Five years after the creation of Coach, its founder drew inspiration from baseball gloves, particularly their strong and flexible leather, to create bags. A technique that would remain the signature of the label over the years. In 1962, costume designer Bonnie Cashin was hired as a stylist. She began by designing the Coach logo (which means coach) depicting a coachman on a carriage pulled by two horses, a way to evoke the tradition of elegance from another century. Driven by her bold vision, the newcomer introduced colors and textures into the leather goods collections and also developed new accessories: pens, shoes, glasses... Reed Krakoff then took the reins of the Artistic Direction in 1996 and gave new life to the house by celebrating in his own way the artisanal know-how and the optimism of authentic American style. Since 2014, it has been Stuart Vevers who has been working to reinvent this heritage. Rich from his years of past experiences at Calvin Klein, Givenchy, Louis Vuitton, Mulberry, and Loewe, he breathes new life into Coach. He then imagines collections with a free and inclusive spirit, thus uniting the new generation, its celebrities, and millennials, from Kate Moss to Zayn Malik. In 2017, Stuart Vevers received the Accessories Designer of the Year award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America and the Designer of the Year award from the American Apparel & Footwear Association recognizing his work at Coach. While bags remain the emblem of the brand, it has managed to diversify and offers a line of ready-to-wear that is equally desirable. Each piece is made with a sustainable approach, reflecting Coach's attention to its impact on individuals, communities, and the planet.
