A jewel in France's fashion crown, Givenchy is defined by a perfect balance between tradition and modernity, know-how and innovation. Founder Hubert de Givenchy took his first steps in the industry as a student in illustration at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Beaux Arts, Paris' prestigious fine arts school, before apprenticing for Jacques Fath, Lucien Lelong, and Elsa Schiaparelli. At the tender age of 24, the young creative launched his self-named brand in 1952 and introduced the public to the first of Givenchy Women's classic styles — the Bettina blouse in white linen and the Separates ensembles: combinations of shirts and skirts that were as simple as they were entirely chic. The history of Givenchy is marked with the meeting of minds, and if there's one such encounter that would go down in the label's history, it would be with Audrey Hepburn. The young actress became Hubert de Givenchy's muse, dressing her in films such as Breakfast at Tiffany's, where the legend of the little black dress was born. Recognized several times over, and knighted by the Legion of Honor in 1983, de Givenchy would leave the company in 1995 after 40 years at the helm. Acquired by LVMH in 1988, the house would welcome a host of Creative Directors, each of whom would reshape the brand's identity all while reinterpreting its signature aesthetics: John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Julien MacDonald, Riccardo Tisci, and most recently Clare Waight Keller prior to her departure in 2020. The latest collection is the work of Matthew M. Williams, founder of 1017 Alyx 9SM and former Creative Director for Lady Gaga and Kanye West. Here he rings in a new chapter in the Givenchy saga: a subversive line accompanied by formalist accents and the artisanal elegance that has always been this beloved label's calling card.> View more
