"Luxury alternative fashion that's uncompromising in regard to design, its employees' well-being and the planet." Carcel is more than just a brand. This initiative from Veronica D'Souza and Louise Van Hauen is a social project with an ecological dimension. Before launching Carcel in 2016, Veronica D'Souza studied social entrepreneurship and sustainable business at New York's Columbia University, followed by the Copenhagen Business School and then INSEAD in France. Meanwhile, Louise Van Hauen pursued a design course at the London College of Fashion and then London's Royal College of Art. The two Danes met in 2014 in Nairobi where Louise worked as Creative Director for a bag label and Veronica was co-founder of the Ruby Cup, a programme offering sustainable menstrual hygiene products. Improving women's lives has always been at the heart of Veronica's mission. When she visited a prison in Kenya, she learnt that most of its occupants had been imprisoned for crimes relating to the effects of living below the poverty line. This knowledge pushed her into action, giving her the idea of creating fair trade employment to help prisoners free themselves from repression, enabling them to support their families. Carcel's second commitment is eco-responsible production run entirely in-house to better manage stocks in real time, avoid a build-up of unsold stock and minimise its carbon footprint. This desire led the two founders to strategically select prisons with whom to collaborate. A high level of crime and a wealth of sustainable materials prompted the duo to choose Peru, more specifically the central prison in Cusco where production mainly revolves around alpaca wool. This first location was then followed by a second in Chiang Mai, Thailand, to produce silk garments. Within these walls is where the magic happens. Each Carcel piece is embroidered with the name of the craftswoman who makes it, a detail which may seem trivial but nevertheless has a special meaning. Carcel collections are timeless, non-seasonal and are made from natural fabrics.
