Fall-Winter 2021-2022: 5 Hot Trends for Back-to-School Season

Coming hot on the heels of worldwide lockdowns, this season's wardrobe is festive and full of energy. From the 60s to sequins to snuggly sweaters, here's a closer look at this autumn's sharpest styles.

All that glitters

This fall, sequins are back in a big way — and they're just as perfect for daytime as for a night on the town. A clever play on this black-tie staple sees sneakers decked-out in sparkles at Miu Miu, while Prada's reinvented comfortable elegance with this sequined short-sleeve sweater. They're even finding their way onto hats, like on Prada's Shine Bright cap and Maison Michel's multicolor bucket hat. It's the perfect year to add some glitter to our tried-and-true autumn faves.

Quilting

We never thought we'd say it, but quilted coats may be on their way to de-throning the ubiquitous puffer jacket. Not only are these styles sure to keep you toasty this winter, they're also the perfect weapon against humidity. Quilted details have even ascended to the apex of haute couture, and today you'll find this detailing on bags, outerwear, and even dresses. Take Burberry, for instance, who's brought us a veste short khaki jacket in their emblematic Vintage Check print, or Ganni who's given quilting a major update with pieces in thick fabrics and impeccably precise cuts. Miu Miu has also thrown their hat in the ring with this XXL tote bag, a day-to-day essential that also happens to be entirely of the moment.

The Canadian Tuxedo

Canadians will call it American, and Americans will say it's not their fault. Still, whenever we think of the total-denim look, or the infamous "Canadian tuxedo," we can't help reminisce over teen sweethearts Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake's coupled-up look at the 2001 American Music Awards. Whether or not that was the denim tux's iconic moment will remain up for debate, but one thing's for certain — this look is one for the books. All the hottest brands are dusting off this frequent-flyer of the 2000s, which remains iconic for its blend of cool and casual. At APC we find classic jean shirts and the Mother of Pearl jacket. Meanwhile, at Balenciaga, denim is everywhere — from the logo-emblazoned trapeze skirt to these slightly stone-washed, baggy pants.

Oversized Knitwear

While roomy sweaters are an autumn classic, this year it's all about big knit energy. That means a double (or triple) dose of coziness, and the luxe wools and cashmeres usually reserved for our favorite sweaters can now compose an entire outfit, from scarves, to pants, skirts, and tops. Who said cocoons can't be chic? Not us. Balenciaga's yellow knit and Acne's men's sweater in a wool, mohair, and alpaca blend are this season's musts for comfort connoisseurs.

Fringe

There's something about the wild, wild West that will never not be cool. Indeed, year after year, cowboy-inspired details find their ways into our hearts, minds, and closets. Fringe in particular is always in, and you really couldn't miss it at this year's Fall-Winter Fashion Week, especially at Etro, Chloé, and Fendi. It's worth noting, though, that the Sundance Kid look isn't for the faint of heart; a micro-dose of the aesthetic is often all it takes. Luckily, choices abound: Palm Angels brings us a plaid overcoat with fringed hemming, while YCH swept us off our feet with these loose black pants with fringe at the ankle. Originality is always the order of the day at Prada, and these loose black pants with fringe at the ankle. Originality is always the order of the day at Prada, and this two-tone blouse with a fringe-adorned back is no exception. A couple clever details is truly all it takes for a positively unimpeachable ensemble.
