The Fashion World Champions The LGBTQ+ Community

NEWS | May 15, 2020
Fashion houses are demonstrating their allyship to minorities, in the interest of greater inclusivity. This year's "Pride" collections pledge support to associations that provide important services to the LGBTQ+ community, alongside collaborations with trans models, and more.

On May 17, 1990, the World Health Organization finally removed homosexuality from its list of mental illnesses. Thirty years later, this date has become The International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, and is celebrated all over the world by supporters of the cause, from committed activists to designers and fashionistas. Amongst them is the iconic Donatella Versace, who was named Stonewall Ambassador just last year. It's a highly symbolic role, bearing the name of the bar where a 1969 police raid caused a wave of riots. This anniversary is commemorated at the Gay Pride events that take place around the world each June.

Last year's Pride parades also rang in loads of capsule collections showcasing their backing of LGBTQ+ rights. Spice Girl Victoria Beckham sported a t-shirt declaring "Everyone deserves love," adorned by letters filled in with the colors of the rainbow. Proceeds were donated to the Albert Kennedy Trust, a British organization helping unhoused members of the LGBTQ+ community. Demna Gvasalia also created a bag for Balenciaga in the same colors.

Brands' commitment to combatting homophobia and transphobia extends beyond the products themselves to the choice of models. Gucci recently invited Hari Nef — the first transgender model signed by IMG — to walk their January 2016 show. Krow, another leading trans model, has walked for Balmain, 1017 Alyx 9SM, Acne Studios, and Alexander McQueen. An increase in representation that, by giving the queer community better visibility, is helping to modernize past mindsets and encourage an embrace of difference.
