Today's Best Music Podcasts

NEWS | June 26, 2020
Printemps.com brings you our selection of the latest, most innovative podcasts that are enriching our understanding of music past and present.

The most in-depth: "Dissect," produced by Spotify

Created independently in 2016 by Cole Cuchna and bought in 2018 by Spotify, this American podcast analyzes some of the most important contemporary hip-hop albums — from Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly to Beyonce's Lemonade, and, of course, Frank Ocean's Channel Orange and Tyler, the Creator's Flower Boy. At a time when everything seems to move at high speed, especially in the music industry, "Dissect" suggests we slow down to examine just one essential album per season, with an episode dedicated to each song. Educational and always-relevant, Cole Cuchna, who holds a degree in musical composition from the University of California, leads us to the heart of today's most fascinating tracks with deep investigations of their lyrics, their production, and their impact. Praised in Time Magazine, The Guardian, and Quartz, "Dissect" was also named the best podcast of 2018 by the New York Times.

The most interdisciplinary: "Ciné Tempo" produced by France Music

Every Saturday at 1pm on France Musique, film critic and director Thierry Jousse brings us along for another episode of "Ciné Tempo," an hour-long show that explores the links between music and cinema.

Since its launch in September 2017, it explored the musical world of celebrated filmmakers like Agnès Varda, David Lynch, Jean-Luc Godard, and Wes Anderson. It also regularly tackles broader themes, like the master composers of Japanese feature films, original soundtracks of Hollywood films from the 70s, and the music of African-American cinema.

The most eclectic: "Song Exploder" produced by Radiotopia

Whether you're a fan of pop, hip hop, or punk, there is something for even the most eclectic tastes with "Song Exploder." Every two weeks, this American podcast released in 2014 by musician Hrishikesh Hirway gives the mic to a different artist. Each one takes us into their creative process and talks in-depth about a special track. Some of the most popular musicians to swing by have been FKA Twigs, Bon Iver, Metallica, MGMT, Solange, and even Iggy Pop. Named "The best podcast of 2015" by iTunes, "Song Exploder" has also covered soundtracks from much-loved shows such as "Stranger Things," "House of Cards," "Downton Abbey," and "Game of Thrones."
