Since launching his self-titled brand, fifteen years ago, Tom Ford is constantly expanding his business. His latest adventure? Men's underwear. Launched at the end of 2018, Tom Ford Underwear is a concentrate of the American label's DNA. Currently available only for men, the range consists of four models (briefs, trunks, boxer shorts and classic boxers), in a selection of colours, fabrics and a total of forty-three different designs. A revolutionary innovation: nude colours to suit all skin tones, rarely seen in men's underwear collections.
Born in Austin, Texas, Tom Ford spent most of his childhood in Santa Fe, New Mexico. As a teenager, he flew to New York where he began studying Art History at New York University. He later abandoned this path to focus on architecture, studying at the Parson's School of Design in New York, and then Paris. In 1990, he joined the team at Gucci as a womenswear designer. Two years later, he was promoted to Design Director before being appointed as Creative Director in 1994, a position he held until 2004. Under his leadership, the Italian design house made a successful comeback, and the designer introduced his new porno chic aesthetic. In parallel, he joined Saint Laurent in 2000, where he oversaw the Fashion and Beauty divisions for four years. In 2005, he announced the launch of his eponymous label. Initially focused on sunglasses and makeup, the label expanded to menswear in 2007, before introducing womenswear in 2010. A multi-award winner, Tom Ford notably received several CFDA Awards in 1995, 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2008.
In addition to his fashion business, the designer has also made a name for himself in cinema by writing and directing the films, A Single Man in 2009 and Nocturnal Animals in 2016.
