Renowned for its minimalism and monochrome silhouettes, the Jil Sander Ready-to-Wear label combines a relaxed style with a practical aesthetic. Founded in 1968 by German designer Jil Sander, the fashion house offers clothing staples for both women and men. In 2017 Lucie and Luke Meier, previously head designers for Dior and Supreme respectively, took over the reins of Jil Sander's creative direction. "When I was approached to take on the creative director role, the project seemed impossible without Lucie. We had always talked about the possibility of working together. And even though Jil Sander had been a style inspiration for me during the '90s, Lucie had a very special relationship with the brand", Luke confided. In keeping with the label, the duo has made a commitment to respect the brand's aesthetics, not to add any unnecessary details and to conserve its quintessential style. Tones are neutral, silhouettes sculpted with subtle features and impeccable lines. Always trying to ensure a casual style is in play, Jil Sander brings us striped linen shirts, loose black suit trousers, graphic vest tops and oversized shirt dresses, all produced using technical materials or natural fabrics such as breathable cotton, recycled cashmere and moleskin. The concept of contrast is central to the Jil Sander label's creative process for the Spring-Summer 2020 collections. For men's and women's designs, silhouettes alternate between fluidity and clean cuts, finding harmony between opposing forces. In addition to signature suits and loose-fit shirts, interesting contrasts are created with surprising long fringes and men's oriental-style tunics. Several botanical prints and striped motifs add vibrancy to this otherwise purist and terrestrial colour palette, while the use of organic materials reflects the values of Jil Sander. Fitting proof of a close connection to the label's roots.
