The eyewear world is buzzing with small labels, each one as unique as the next. And among this sea of stainless-steel frames and coloured glass, one name is standing out: Krewe. Named after krewes, the associations that organise carnival parades for Mardi Gras, this New Orleans-based brand is gradually spreading its original and refined aesthetic. Founded by Stirling Barrett in 2013, the label offers sunglasses and frames for optical lenses. Designed and produced locally, these pieces earned Barrett a place among the finalists of the prestigious CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund in 2016. This accolade put the spotlight on a brand, already a firm favourite of celebrities. From Beyoncé (the first to wear them) to Meghan Markle, not to mention Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner, Krewe has the potential to impress the most fashionable women. Its most sought-after models include the St. Louis, whose ornate bridge is reminiscent of the cast-iron balconies found in certain parts of the city, and the Conti, named after the vibrant street in the French Quarter. After studying photography and advertising at the SMU Meadows School of the Arts in Dallas, Stirling Barrett worked as an artist for eight years before founding his eyewear company. Ever keen to give back to the community in which he grew up, he launched the Krewe Foundation, offering eye exams and glasses to students in need. Every year, he organises the Krewe Fête, a four-day festival that brings the brand's vendors and friends together in New Orleans to raise funds for the foundation.
